Why does my organisation need a workplace first aid kit?

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment for first aid. There is no mandatory list of contents for first aid boxes. An employee must use good judgement to assess first aid needs. However the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) does recommend a minimum stock of items for a first aid kit in a low risk environment. Our workplace first aid kits all contain the minimum content requirements under HSE guideline. However we emphasis it is the responsibility of the employer to decide whether additional items are necessary for the particular workplace context. The HSE also requires items to be replaced after expiry and safely disposed of. Higher risk environments (e.g. catering environments) should consider additional first aid supplies such as burns gel & dressing and additional bandages & tape.
