When it comes to odours, ozone is pretty incredible stuff. It is a non-chemical, UK based, natural and safe solution. So, what is Ozone, what can it do, and how do you use it?
What is Ozone and how does it work?
Ozone works as an anti-odour product because it is a naturally occurring gas that has an unusual property. It is formed when oxygen is passed over a cell within the generator which converts it into ozone. That means it now has 3 oxygen atoms rather than 2. This third atom is unstable, and it doesn’t want to stay with the ozone, so it attaches itself to the odour molecules in the air. Then, because it is unstable, it ‘self destructs’ taking the nasty smell with it.
Once it has gone, the air will contain a light, clean, scent reminiscent of the fresh smell you sometimes find after a thunderstorm. No chemicals, no perfumes, just clean, fresh air and an odour free environment.
Not only is the odour gone forever, unless it is re-introduced, ozone has a further benefit. It is so effective that if used in the right way it will also usually destroy most viruses, fungal spores and bacteria. It will even help keep some insect infestations such as bedbugs and fleas at bay.
So, let’s put all this into a familiar context. Here are five practical ways in which Ozofresh ozone generators can be deployed in domiciliary or other care environments.
Using Ozone in Domiciliary and Care Homes
1. Corridors and walkways. Areas such as corridors are notoriously difficult to keep odour free because the issues are often caused by overspill of smells from other areas. Odours leak from adjoining rooms and gather in the walkways. This tends to create ‘pools’ of odour that sit in the space. An Aura machine can be wall mounted for security purposes and slow release a low level of ozone into the area where the odour is collecting. The timer function is also useful for ensuring the ozone is distributed to best effect when the corridor is being used less. While you cannot control the odour entering the corridor, you can neutralise it where is gathers and stop it developing.
2. Resident rooms with low levels of odour. The Ozofresh PlugIn is capable of continuous operation to tackle lighter odour issues in resident rooms. Simply plug it in and leave it to run. It will soon deal with less embedded smells such as body odour and dirty clothing. Where security is an issue, the Aura is an alternative option.
3. Resident rooms with heavy odours. This is where the combination of the Eclipse Pro and PlugIns can really be effective in not only removing the odour, but then keeping it at bay for long periods of time. Many care homes will use the Eclipse as part of their regular deep clean cycle by relocating the resident temporarily and then ‘shock treating’ the area. With its built-in ozone destruct cycle the Eclipse Pro will not only destroy free floating odour particles, but it will also often draw them from the soft furnishings and other surfaces. In many cases an average resident room can be both odours, and depending on the conditions, virus free and back in service within the hour. Then simply add a plugin to keep the odour from developing again. Sadly, with some resident rooms, incontinence and other issues will inevitably mean the odour will be reintroduced, but repeating the same process means it will never be a major problem again.
4. Communal kitchens. Again, these are very difficult to keep odour free. Cooking smells, particularly fried and spice heavy foods, can be difficult to shift. We usually suggest a regular heavy treatment with an Eclipse Pro to eradicate the built-up smell, coupled with the installation of an Aura or plugIns to keep the smells under control.
5. Heavy odour conditions in vacant rooms. Where residents room or treatment areas are subject to very high levels of odours, there is always going to be an ongoing issue. Spraying chemicals or perfume-based solutions is either not an option or simply adds an additional mask of perfume that doesn’t really help. The best option is often to deploy the Eclipse Pro in the area at a suitable point in your regular daily routine or cleaning schedule. Residents will need to leave while the area is treated, but the room will be back in service quickly to minimise the disruption. One very common scenario for example, is for facilities to treat rooms between occupancy with a very high level of ozone.
For treatment rooms, which usually have downtime overnight, simply set the Eclipse Pro at the end of the day. In the morning the room will be odour free and sanitised ready for use.
Whatever your odour issues, the Ozofresh range can usually help resolve them. The technology has been developed to specifically address odour problems for care environments, and they are the market leading devices for ease of use and efficiency.
All the equipment is developed, supported and constructed for the UK market and meets applicable standards. As there are no chemical consumables, there are no COSHH requirements, the equipment requires no complex specialist training, and everything is fully warrantied.
Ozofresh have been creating ozone technology for the care sector for over a decade. The reason for their continued success is simple. Their ozone generator technology does something that is invaluable in most care environments. It actually takes hold of
the odour and destroys it entirely. With CQC requirements asking for a care facility to be ‘visibly clean and free from odours that are offensive or unpleasant’ having the right products from the Ozofresh range just makes sense.
